The Brainy Bunch project to improve third grade reading levels is off and running!  It’s amazing what having data on where we stand in certain areas can do to motivate people to act.  We’ve had a group in the Education Vision Council who have worked for about 18 months to launch this project because they were so concerned that 1 in every 4 third graders in El Paso County isn’t reading at grade level.  That’s scary considering 70% of the children who don’t read on grade level in third grade eventually drop out of high school.

So the QLI report motivated our group to do something!  And now we have launched a book drive to gather books and redistribute them, along with a parent guide on reading to your child, to parents of young children through pediatrician’s offices, birthing centers, early care and education programs and home visiting programs.  If you want to drop off a book, you can do that at any Walmart or branch of the Pikes Peak Library District. To read more about this project, please visit:
